Avocado Toast with Sprouts

            Okay millennials - our favorite overpriced breakfast item needs to be tackled at home, don't ya think? I get myself in trouble for trying the newest fanciest version of avocado toast (lol)! Ten dollar toast isn't exactly the savviest choice when dining out for breakfast. I created this at home for way cheaper and it was amazing! Instead of adding cheese, egg or oils to my toast I added sprouts and pickled red onion. Keeping the toppings raw on an artisan bread tones down the heavier contents and allows more space for nutrition. Let's talk about of some of the amazing benefits of sprouts! Sprouts are alkaline, contain amino acids, iron, calcium, sulfur, antioxidants and chlorophyll. Nutrient-rich veggies such as these are important to consume on the daily, and can easily be added to toast like I did here or salads, sandwiches, soups, even green smoothies. Adding nutrition to these kinds of recipes is easy with sprouts and other greens because they're so versatile. The pickled red onion provides is fermented, meaning that this meal includes probiotics and digestive enzymes. This also adds a salty element so it becomes unnecessary to add extra table salt or sodium. 

         Last but definitely not least is the main focus of this recipe and that's a ripe and creamy organic Hass avocado! As you may know, avocados are packed with heathy fats that allow for sustained energy and glowing skin, nails and hair via organ protection and cell structuring. Healthy fats such as avocados and nuts and seeds are something to never be feared within a healthy diet and lifestyle. Fats stimulate functions such as creating energy, insulation, cell membranes and signaling between cells. Fat is an important macronutrient because it absorbs fat-soluble vitamins, allows for feelings of satiety and sensory functions. 

               This specific recipe contains:

  • 1 slice of organic sourdough bread from a local bakery (vegan) or if you are gluten intolerant choose a gluten-free bread from a health-food store (my favorite gluten free bread here)
  • 1 whole organic Hass avocado, smashed
  • 1 handful of organic Zesty Greens sprouts
  • A few slices of pickled red onion - You can pickle onion at home or buy from the store in a jar
